We’re living in a world where our phones are practically an extension of our hands, and social media has become as essential as that morning cup of coffee (or tea, if that’s your vibe!). I’ll admit, it used to be the first thing I’d check in the morning, even before my feet hit the floor.


Social media is where I’d catch up with friends, share my thoughts, and stay in the loop with what’s happening in the world. But after more than a decade of scrolling, liking, and posting, I noticed something: while social media can bring us closer, it can also leave us feeling, well... a bit “meh.”

Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword


Social media is fantastic for keeping in touch with friends across the globe, finding people who geek out over the same things you do, and even discovering new opportunities. But on the flip side, it can also be a source of stress, anxiety, and that dreaded FOMO (fear of missing out).


Have you ever felt like you’re always one step behind or not doing enough because your feed is filled with perfectly curated snapshots of everyone else’s life? Or maybe your mood sours because you’re bombarded by negative news. Yep, I’ve been there too.

I remember the day I realized that some social media platforms were becoming more of a drain than a positive experience. Between the endless negative news and some over-the-top “look at me” posts, I found myself feeling antsy and agitated. I tried cleaning up my feed, muting certain posts, and even unfriending some folks. But the vibe, sadly, didn’t change, nor did my feelings. So, I made what I considered a bold move: I said goodbye to Twitter first. Then went Facebook, and last, Instagram.


As I hit “delete account,” I feared having a serious case of FOMO. What if I missed something important? What if my connections thought I was bailing on them? The “what ifs” came fast and furious, but that didn’t stop me from bidding those platforms a fond farewell.


Now, I haven’t ditched social media altogether. I decided to stick with LinkedIn because it feels more aligned with who I am and what I value. Not to mention, to me, it has a better vibe and energy.


I don’t miss Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. As a matter of fact, the minute I deleted my accounts, I felt an unexpected wave of relief. The angst and negativity I’d been carrying around vanished—a good sign that I was doing the right thing for my mental well-being.

By no means am I suggesting you delete all your accounts. Social media does serve some good purposes. But I’d love to share some light-hearted tips to keep it fun and positive:


1. Set Your Social Media “Happy Hour”

   - Instead of mindlessly scrolling, set a specific time to check your feeds. It’s like having a social media “happy hour” where you can catch up without getting lost in the digital abyss.

 

2. Curate Your Vibe

   - Follow accounts that make you smile, laugh, or feel inspired. And don’t be shy about unfollowing or muting those that don’t. You’re the curator of your feed, so make sure it jives with you.

 

3. Take a Social Media Siesta

   - Occasionally, take a break. Whether it’s for a day, a weekend, or just a few hours, unplugging can do wonders for your mental clarity. You might be surprised at how refreshing it feels!

 

4. Check-In with Yourself

   - When you log on to social media, check in with how it makes you feel. If it’s bringing you down, it might be time to reassess how you’re using it. Being mindful will help you choose what’s best for you.

 

5. Make It Meaningful

   - Instead of just scrolling, try engaging! Leave comments, share your thoughts, and connect in ways that feel genuine. It’s like turning a virtual nod into a real conversation.

Social media isn’t going anywhere, but with a little mindfulness, it doesn’t have to mess with your mental health. By setting boundaries, curating your feed, and staying in tune with your feelings, you can enjoy the best of what social media has to offer—without the negative side effects.
