Your brain is like the ultimate behind-the-scenes boss, constantly working to shape how you see the world, how you handle challenges, and how you take steps forward toward your goals. The fascinating world of neuroscience dives deep into the brain’s inner workings, giving us some serious “aha” moments about how our mindset is formed—and more importantly, how we can change it.


Now, here’s the good news: Your brain is incredibly adaptable. This nifty concept, known as neuroplasticity, means you can literally change the way you think and react by creating new neural pathways. So, if you’ve been feeling like you’re stuck in a mental rut, know this—you can rewire your brain to support a mindset that’s not just resilient but downright unstoppable. (Stick with me, I’ve got some easy-peasy tips coming your way.)


I remember a time when I felt totally stuck, both personally and professionally. No matter how hard I tried, it seemed like I couldn’t get past certain mental blocks—like those pesky stories of “not good enough.” That’s when I dove headfirst into the neuroscience behind mindset—I became a full-fledged neuroscience geek.


The more I learned, the more I realized that I wasn’t at the mercy of my thoughts or my inner critic’s constant chatter. I discovered that I had the power to change my thoughts and turn down the volume on that negative inner voice. This knowledge and the tools I picked up along the way were total game-changers for me.

With a growth mindset, you start to see that you can develop new skills, learn from your missteps, and even turn your flops into fabulous learning opportunities—because your brain is ready and willing to adapt and grow right alongside you.


When you challenge yourself—whether it’s by diving into new projects, trying something that scares you a little, or embracing your mistakes as stepping stones—you’re actually firing up your brain’s neuroplasticity. Your brain starts building stronger connections that make these positive behaviors feel more natural over time. And here’s the kicker: The more you practice, the more your brain gets on board with your growth and confidence-building endeavors.


I’ll give you a personal example…


I grew up hearing that nice little girls should be seen and not heard. Not exactly my idea of a good time, but I adopted the story anyway. I believed I wasn’t meant to be heard and that speaking up would just “rock the boat” and annoy people. So, I stayed quiet.


But then, I hit a point where I was so tired of stuffing my feelings and thoughts. I was over the whole people-pleasing, peacekeeping schtick that kept me small and silent. So, I started doing some serious work on myself. I began to challenge the stories of “not good enough,” using them as clues to figure out what I really needed, rather than letting them keep me stuck.


I’ll never forget the first time I truly challenged myself to speak up and speak my truth. My heart was racing; my voice was shaking. I took a deep breath, sat up straight, tilted my chin a little higher, and squared my shoulders (taking up space—one of the cool neuroscience-based tricks I still use to this day).


The more I worked on my self-worth and “taking up space,” the easier it got. My brain started to get with the program, and over time, speaking up became more natural—dare I say, even empowering. This experience cemented my belief in the power of a growth mindset and just how amazing our brains really are.

1. Mindful Reflection: Take a few minutes each day to reflect on your thoughts and experiences. This simple practice helps you spot those sneaky unhelpful patterns and engage your prefrontal cortex—the decision-making powerhouse in your brain—so you can make more intentional choices.


   I make it a point to journal daily, even if it’s just for five minutes. It’s a practice that’s helped me get a better handle on the blocks and negative stories that pop up. Plus, it gives me insight so I can engage the right tools to rewire my brain.


2. Visualization: Picture yourself succeeding—not just in broad strokes, but with all the juicy details. Visualization strengthens the neural pathways tied to confidence and resilience. Even if it’s not your go-to tool, give it a whirl—it might surprise you.


   Visualization has been a bit hit-or-miss for me. Sometimes, it’s hard to really get into it, but when I do, it’s powerful stuff. Before I take steps toward a big goal, I visualize that goal as if it’s already happened. I focus on how I’ll feel, what I’ll experience, and what my life will look like once the goal is in the bag. This not only helps quiet those negative stories but also helps me figure out the steps I need to take to make it happen. And here’s a fun fact—your brain doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what you imagine, so when you visualize, it reacts as if it’s already happening. Hello, motivation!

 

3. Positive Affirmations: Start your day with positive, believable affirmations. This isn’t just about feel-good vibes; it’s about activating your brain’s reward centers and reinforcing your belief in yourself.

 

   I used to think positive affirmations were a total waste of time—partly because I was using ones that didn’t resonate with me and felt a bit out of reach. But once I found affirmations that clicked, everything changed. Now, I’m hooked! I even use this nifty app called Thinkup to record and play back my affirmations. It’s a small habit that’s made a big difference in how I tackle challenges and boost my confidence.

 

4. Continuous Learning: Keep your brain on its toes by diving into continuous learning. Whether you’re picking up a new skill or going deep on a topic you’re passionate about, challenging your brain keeps it adaptable and ready for whatever comes your way.

 

   Being a lifelong learner has been pivotal to my personal and professional growth. Whether it’s attending workshops, reading new books, or exploring new hobbies, I’m always looking for ways to challenge my brain and keep it in top shape.
